Re-creating a song gives a client an opportunity to take a song they may be familiar with and connect with it on a deeper level. Honoring a song in its original form calls upon a client's creative capacities to sing or play a pre-composed melody, replicate certain rhythmic patterns from short-term memory, or make choices in the moment by exploring various instrumentation. Within music therapy, clients have the freedom to make their own mark on an existing piece of music; clients can make a meaningful song their own by experimenting with creative choices in melodic phrasing, harmonic structure, instrumentation, or rhythm.
